Kansas City’s Union Station fielded complaints from the public over a lighting display dedicated to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce ’s reported wedding .

Union Station announced on Thursday, July 2 — the same night as Swift and Kelce’s rehearsal dinner — that it would light up the metropolitan complex in some of the couple’s favorite colors in honor of the $26 million they’d donated to local and national charities.

“Tonight, we light up Union Station in orange and teal for Taylor Swift and red and gold for Travis Kelce,” a post on X announced. “Thank you, Travis and Taylor, for your incredible generosity today, supporting charities across the nation, including here in Kansas City, and making a lasting impact that will touch thousands of lives.”

The congratulatory message went on, “And from all of us at Union Station and throughout the Kansas City community, enjoy your special weekend. We send our congratulations and wish you every happiness together. Tonight, the Kingdom lights shine for you.”

The tribute was undoubtedly special for Kelce, who has spent the entirety of his 13-year NFL career playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. (Kelce signed a reported three-year, $54.735 million contract extension with the Chiefs in March.)

Not everyone was thrilled with the tribute to the soon-to-be newlyweds, with multiple people complaining in the X comment section about the timing of the lighting display.

“You should be honoring our country 250 years with red, white and blue,” one person complained.

Another was even angrier, writing, “Good lord. What a bunch of s***. Why not red, white and blue. Did ya forget it was our nations 250 birthday? But sure 2 narcissistic ‘celebrities’ are more important than our freedom.”

The social media discourse got so heated that Union Station replied to clarify that there were separate plans to honor the 250th anniversary of the U.S. in time for the July 4 holiday.

“We will feature a red, white and blue lighting on July 4th. As we do every year. And at multiple times throughout the year,” Union Station responded directly to those complaining.

Swift and Kelce are rumored to tie the knot at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Friday, July 3. Us Weekly previously reported that around 1,000 people are expected to attend the wedding — which a source indicated to Us will be a “whimsical” celebration .

The insider also hinted that the wedding will be inspired by Swift’s love of fairytales , as evidenced by reports from multiple media outlets that a grand castle and white staircase were built as part of their wedding set inside of MSG earlier this week.

Kelce proposed to Swift in August 2025 directly after he welcomed her as a guest on his “New Heights” podcast. (The couple were first spotted together in 2023.)
